Popular one-day MasterClass – popular course
Date: 12th November, 2015
One of the most important components of FOI is the FOI Officer. It is essential to understand the role of the FOI officer and how that role integrates with data protection.
The new Freedom of Information (FOI) Act 2014 was signed into law on October 14th 2014, extending the scope of FOI legislation to all public bodies with limited specified exceptions. Given new legislation and emerging decisions from the Information Commissioner interpreting that legislation, it has never been more important to understand the FOI process. Furthermore, the FOI Act gives people a right of access to records held by most public bodies including Government Departments, the HSE and Local Authorities, FOI officers may find that they must make daily decisions on how to respond to requests for information under the act and if and how you may apply exemptions to the Act.
Given that the new Act has changed the FOI landscape, FOI officers must keep up to date with decisions of the Information Commissioner, the Information Tribunal and the Courts. As the law develops in this area and case law can set precedent, it is imperative that FOI Officers, and those with responsibility for decisions regarding FOI within Public Bodies, are aware of their obligations and ensure that they understand how and when exemptions to the act may be applied, or not, and what has to be demonstrated to apply them correctly.
CMG Professional Training are Ireland’s leading training providers in regulatory and compliance issues and are hosting a one day CPD accredited MasterClass for Freedom of Information Officers in the public sector who are in direct contact with freedom of Information Act issues; who make decisions on FOI and who need to be completely up to date on the new amendments, extensions and scope of the act.
